They are from a 72 Arctic Cat EXT.
I started with a screwdriver & worked the crimp loose around the edge. It took about 8 rounds to get it right without messing up the ring. I recommend putting a couple layers of masking tape around the gauge housing to keep from scratching it.
Once I got it apart, I cleaned the glass with some steel wool & 409 cleaner
I cleaned the numbers with some rubbing compound & Q-tips. I didn't want to get too aggresive & mess them up.
I cleaned the internals with some compressed air & more Q-tips. I made sure everything looked in good working order, no broken wires or obvious problems.
I cleaned the face plates on the wire wheel. One was rusted so bad, it had holes in it. I replaced that with one with another from a donor speedo that had a broken needle & glass
Then a coat of black primer.
Installed some decals I picked up
The cases were in tough shape, pretty rusty. I cleaned the inside the best I could & sprayed them with some off-white paint on the inside. The outsides I try to leave original if I can but these ones were too far gone. I cleaned them up & sprayed them with silver cad paint. Not perfect but good enough for a rider.
I put them back together & re-crimped the chrome ring. Again, wrap the housing with tape to keep it from getting scratched. I use a small brass hammer to work my way around the gauge & tap the ring back down. Take your time.
